Well it seems fate had more in mind for this mother and daughter act than rows about the washing up. Here’s a mother who was never gonna yell “turn it down!” and a daughter who was never gonna listen anyway. So Queen Josephine brings all her parental skills to the decks whilst Princess A employs her selective hearing perfectly. Abba asks does your mother know? And Princess A replies – oh yes she’s right by my side Bringing It On.

Nick Martin: Blue Eyed Boys
6 November 2007 to 3 February 2008
Café Balcony, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
Blue Eyed Boys, a new display at Brighton Museum, shows a selection of portraits of gay men with blue eyes, from the Bear world. Painted by Nick Martin and inspired by the style of Holbein, they represent members of the gay community who celebrate being big and bearded.
Nick Martin said ‘I want to express the beauty and grace of the large hirsute men who are my subjects. They are my male-equivalent of the Rubenesque figures of the 17th century. I also want to celebrate Bear culture and the inclusivity that it represents’.
Based on the style of Holbein’s paintings in their straightforward approach to portraiture, the grand scale and impact of these pictures suits their subject matter. The factual information included in them is a direct ‘homage’ to Holbein’s work. Although based on digital photography and drawings of the men who sit for the portraits, they are far from emulating the qualities of the photograph; the artist aims for a naturalistic result based on strong classical drawing - in keeping with Renaissance painting.
Blue Eyed Boys continues at Brighton Museum until 3 February 2008. Admission is free.
